Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
A Schluter bathroom remodel in Houston typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re doing a walk-in shower, a full gut renovation, or a tub-to-shower conversion with Schluter’s KERDI waterproofing system. Most homeowners discover their Schluter system needs attention in one of two ways: they see water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bath, or a tile cracks along the shower floor and they notice the grout never quite dries anymore. If either of those sounds familiar, you’re in the right place, because a failed Schluter waterproofing layer or drain assembly doesn’t fix itself, and in Houston’s humidity, it gets worse faster than anywhere else.
We’re Penhallow Remodeling Houston, and we work with Schluter systems every week. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Schluter, but we know their product line cold: where KERDI board joins KERDI-BAND, what happens when bonding fleece delaminates, and why the KERDI-DRAIN height adjustment ring matters more in a climate that sees this much moisture. Trevor Nash, who owns our Houston shop, studied construction technology before years of full gut-renovations, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner: waterproofing is where Houston bathrooms either live or die.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s shower systems break into a few lines that overlap more than most people realize. The KERDI-SHOWER-KIT comes in a few standard configurations: 32×60 inch center-drain, 38×60 offset-drain, and a handful of larger sizes up to 72×72 for custom pans. The KERDI-LINE drain is a linear version that sits flush against one wall and works with the same waterproofing membrane but uses a different drain body than the standard point drain. If you’re doing a tub-to-shower conversion, that’s the KERDI-SHOWER-TS, and it uses the same expansion tray concept but sized for three-sided alcoves. Older installs may be Schluter’s DITRA uncoupling membrane under floor tile, which is a different animal entirely from the shower waterproofing system.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Houston homeowners hit: Schluter’s KERDI membrane and KERDI board are not the same thickness, and the bonding fleece only works with unmodified thin-set mortar. If someone set your Schluter membrane with a modified mortar, the fleece never properly fused, and that’s exactly the kind of failure that shows up two or three years later as a soft spot in the shower floor. When we do a Schluter remodel, we spec the correct thin-set from the start, and we document every layer so if something ever does fail, we know exactly what’s behind the tile.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling below the bathroom. This usually means a seam in the KERDI membrane or KERDI-BAND has separated, or a screw penetration wasn’t sealed. Water takes the path of least resistance, and a stain directly below the shower drain suggests the drain flange bond has failed.
- Efflorescence or dark grout lines that never dry. Houston’s humidity hides water issues until the minerals in the mortar start showing through. If your grout looks damp 48 hours after the last shower, water is trapped behind the tile and wicking through the thinset.
- A shower floor that flexes or feels spongy. Schluter’s foam trays are solid when properly set, but if the subfloor beneath them had any deflection, or the tray was installed over an unlevel slab, you’ll feel movement. That movement cracks tile and opens the waterproofing envelope.
- Mold smell you can’t locate. Mold inside a wall cavity behind a failed Schluter membrane is common in Houston. The smell comes and goes with the weather, but the mold spores are constant, and by the time you smell it, the framing is already wicking moisture.
- Cracked tiles in a straight line across the shower floor. A straight-line crack pattern often means the tray underneath is cracked or the subfloor shifted. Random cracking is more likely a mortar coverage issue, but any crack in a wet area is a waterproofing compromise.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A Schluter-based bathroom remodel in Houston lands between $9,000 and $28,000, and here’s what moves the number. A straightforward tub-to-shower conversion with standard wall tile and a KERDI tray runs $3,500 to $10,000. A full gut renovation with a custom pan, KERDI-LINE drain, bench seat, and floor-to-ceiling tile hits the $18,000 to $28,000 range. The variables are always: size of the shower footprint, whether we’re moving plumbing, what tile you choose, and whether the existing framing needs repair once we open the walls.
Every quote we give in Houston is a written price before work starts. No estimate range, no verbal ballpark. The number on day one is the number on the invoice. That’s the Kingswell standard, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise backs it in writing: if our work fails inside a year, we return and fix it at no charge. You also get a defined arrival window, background-checked uniformed technicians, and a job site left cleaner than we found it. Materials come from recognized brands like Kohler and Moen for fixtures, and Cambria or Silestone if the remodel extends to countertops, so the products behind our guarantee are as solid as the waterproofing itself.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things yourself without touching the waterproofing: feel the shower floor for flex, run your hand along the grout lines for dampness an hour after use, and look at the ceiling below for staining. Those observations help us diagnose the problem before we even arrive. What you shouldn’t do is pull tile to inspect the membrane yourself. Once you break the tile surface, you’ve compromised whatever waterproofing was still functioning, and a partial demolition leaves the rest of the shower vulnerable. Schluter’s system is integrated: membrane, band, drain, and corners all work as one continuous envelope, and once one part is compromised, the repair becomes a replacement, not a patch.
If you’re seeing any of the failure signs above, call us at (254) 527-5340. We’ll talk through what you’re seeing, give you an honest read on whether it’s a repair or a remodel, and schedule a time to look at it in person.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter KERDI system should last 20 to 30 years in Houston, even with our humidity and hard water, because the waterproofing layer is behind the tile and never exposed to UV or foot traffic. What shortens that lifespan is improper installation: wrong thin-set, missing KERDI-BAND at the seams, or a drain body that wasn’t fully bonded. If your system is failing before ten years, it was almost certainly an install error, not a product failure.
Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll tell you honestly whether the failure looks like workmanship or product, and what it will cost to make it right.
In most cases, no. The KERDI system works because every seam overlaps and bonds into one continuous waterproof envelope. A localized repair is possible if the failure is isolated to a single corner or seam and you’re willing to remove tile in that area, but you’re betting that the rest of the membrane is sound. In a wet area like a Houston shower, a patch repair is a temporary measure, and we’ll tell you that plainly before you spend money on it.

A tub-to-shower conversion with Schluter waterproofing takes 5 to 7 working days in Houston. A full gut renovation with custom pan, moving plumbing, and floor-to-ceiling tile runs 2 to 3 weeks. The Schluter system itself doesn’t slow the job: the foam trays and boards actually save framing time, but the waterproofing layers need to cure properly before tile goes up, and we never rush that step.
Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll give you a written timeline along with your written price.
We keep KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, KERDI-DRAIN assemblies, and the standard KERDI-SHOWER-KIT trays on hand for common sizes, and we source the rest from our Houston suppliers per job. We also stock parts and materials for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when those brands are part of a larger remodel. If you have an existing Schluter product and need a replacement part, we’ll confirm the exact model and compatibility before we order anything.
Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll check the spec against what’s on your wall or in your shower right now.
