Sterling Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you have a Sterling kitchen and a component that’s failed or is starting to fail, we can match the replacement, price it in writing, and handle the install. A full Sterling kitchen remodel in Houston typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and layout changes. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a drawer slide that catches, a hinge that sags, or a finish that’s worn through years before it should have.
The good news is that a failed component rarely means you need to gut the entire kitchen. In a lot of Houston homes, the cabinet boxes are still solid while the hardware, doors, or countertops have given out. We approach every Sterling kitchen job the same way we would for any of the trade brands we work with regularly, like KraftMaid, Cambria, or Silestone: figure out exactly what failed, match it or replace it with something better, and give you a written price before we touch a screwdriver.
Penhallow Remodeling Houston is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Sterling. That matters because it means we’re free to tell you when a repair makes more sense than a replacement, and free to mix brands where it serves the job. We’re not pushing a catalog. We’re fixing the problem.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling kitchen products span several lines, and the compatibility details depend on what you have. The most common we see in Houston kitchens are the Sterling Essentials and Sterling Intrigue cabinet lines. Both are mid-range lines with framed construction, and both use standard 35mm European hinges. That hinge spec matters, because it means you aren’t locked into Sterling-branded hardware if a hinge fails. A quality aftermarket 35mm soft-close hinge will usually fit and often outlasts the original.
One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: Sterling drawer boxes are not all the same depth. If you’re replacing a drawer front or an entire drawer box, measure the box depth, not just the face width. The face may be 15 inches wide while the box is 21 inches deep. Getting that measurement wrong means ordering a part that will never fit, and we’ve seen homeowners order a replacement online, wait two weeks for it, and then call us because the drawer still won’t close. Save yourself the wait. Snap a photo of the label inside the drawer or on the cabinet door hinge. That label usually has the model number and finish code, and it’s the single most useful piece of information when matching a part.
For finishes, Sterling uses a limited palette, and the finish codes on older cabinets don’t always match the current color names. A cabinet labeled “Maple Cognac” in 2014 may be the same finish as something rebranded in 2020. We keep stain matching in-house because even if you order the “right” part, sun exposure in a Houston kitchen changes the color of cabinet faces over time. A door that matches the catalog may not match the cabinet box next to your window. We stain and refinish on site to blend the old with the new.

Signs Your Sterling Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Soft-close hinges that slam or won’t stay closed. The hydraulic damper inside the hinge cup is worn out. This is the single most common Sterling failure we see, and it’s a $6 – $12 part that takes about ten minutes per hinge to replace.
- Drawer slides that catch or grind. Houston humidity works its way into the ball bearings on lower-cost slides. The slide doesn’t need oil, it needs replacement. Forcing it open bends the channel and then you’re replacing the drawer box too.
- Finish flaking or peeling at the cabinet door edges. This usually starts near the sink or dishwasher where steam and heat cycle daily. Once the finish is compromised, the substrate (the panel under the finish) starts absorbing moisture and swelling. You can’t patch this evenly with a touch-up pen. The fix is a new door or a full refacing.
- Countertop seam separation or cracking at the sink cutout. Sterling kitchens often ship with laminate countertops that are a formed over a particleboard substrate. When that substrate gets wet, it swells, and nothing you do on the surface will stop it. The countertop has to come out.
- Cabinet boxes pulling away from the wall or sagging in the center. In older Houston homes, this is often failed wall anchors or a floor that has settled. It is not a hinge adjustment. Call before the box drops and takes the countertop with it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Sterling kitchen remodel in Houston runs $14,000 – $45,000. A smaller galley kitchen lands closer to $9,000 – $20,000. If you only need cabinet refacing or a partial component replacement, cabinet work alone usually runs $4,000 – $13,000, and a new countertop install lands around $2,000 – $6,500 depending on material. Backsplash work adds $800 – $2,500.
What drives the range: whether the cabinet boxes can be saved, what countertop material you choose (Cambria quartz sits at the top of that range; a basic laminate sits at the bottom), and whether you are moving plumbing or walls. Every project gets a written price before demo day. The number on that quote is the number on the invoice. If we find hidden work after we open the wall, we talk to you before we spend a dollar more, and we put the revised number in writing too. The 365-Day Done Right Promise backs every install: if the work fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. No re-inspection fee, no arguing. It’s written into the contract.
DIY or Call Us?
Some of this work is genuinely DIY-friendly, and we will tell you the truth about that. Replacing a soft-close hinge or a drawer slide is a ten-minute job if you have a screwdriver and the right part. Watching a YouTube video and replacing your own cabinet hardware is not dangerous, and if you get stuck halfway, we are happy to finish the job and only charge for the time we spend.
Countertops, cabinet boxes, and any work that involves removing a sink or a dishwasher are a different story. A laminate countertop that has been water damaged has a swollen substrate, and cutting that out cleanly without damaging the cabinet boxes below takes tools and practice. We have watched homeowners tear into a countertop with a pry bar and pull half the cabinet frame with it. The $400 they saved turned into a $3,000 cabinet repair. If you are not sure which category your job falls into, call (254) 527-5340 and describe the failure. We will tell you over the phone whether it is safe to attempt yourself and what the part should cost before you buy anything.
FAQs

A well-built Sterling cabinet box with plywood sides should hold up for 20 – 30 years in Houston, but the hardware and door finishes often fail between year 8 and year 15. The humidity here is harder on kitchen materials than anything except a flood. Doors and hinges are wear items. The boxes themselves are usually worth keeping.
Hinges and slides should be replaced, not repaired. Once a damper is blown or a bearing is seized, there is no repair that holds. Door finishes can sometimes be touched up, but only if the damage is a scratch and not moisture-driven peeling. A cabinet box that has pulled away from the wall can be re-anchored if the box itself has not rotted. Give us a call at (254) 527-5340 and we will tell you straight which category yours falls into before you spend anything.
Hinge and slide replacement is done in a couple of hours. Door replacement and refinishing runs one to two days on site plus finishing time. A countertop replacement is typically a two-day job: removal and template on day one, install on day two. A full kitchen remodel runs three to six weeks depending on scope. We give you a defined arrival window in writing before work starts, and a live person answers the phone 24/7 if you have questions mid-project.
We keep the common failure parts on the truck: 35mm soft-close hinges, standard drawer slides in 18-inch and 21-inch lengths, and matching touch-up finishes for the most common Sterling colors. Anything unusual we source through our trade suppliers, usually with a one to three day lead time. If you are trying to match a discontinued finish, call us before you order anything online. We can often match it in-house and save you the trouble of returning the wrong color.
If you have a Sterling kitchen failing anywhere in Houston, give us the straight story on what you need, and we will give you the straight number on what it costs. Call (254) 527-5340 to schedule a free estimate. A written price before work starts, a written guarantee with every job, and a real person on the phone when you call. That has been the standard since Trevor Nash started running jobs here, and it does not change for small repairs or full remodels.
