GAF Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We install GAF-compatible paver driveways and repair failed sections across Houston, with full paver driveway installations typically running $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, paver style, and what’s underneath. Most homeowners call us after a section sinks or shifts, or when pavers crack along the driveway edge near the street. The usual culprits are Houston’s expansive clay soil, poor base prep from the original install, or water washing out the sand bedding between joints.

A quick word on our relationship with GAF: Penhallow Remodeling Houston is an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with GAF as a manufacturer, but we work with their paver product lines regularly and know how to match replacements to what’s already in your driveway. When you call, we’ll ask a few questions about your existing pavers, come out to look at the section that’s failing, and give you a written number before any work starts.

One thing we’ve learned from years of working Houston driveways is that the soil here doesn’t forgive shortcuts. The clay under Meyerland and Bellaire behaves differently than the sandy loam out toward Katy, and that matters when we’re digging out a failed base. Trevor Nash has spent enough time with Houston dirt to know when a driveway needs a full re-compaction and when a spot repair will hold. That’s the difference between a fix that lasts and one that cracks again in six weeks.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF makes several paver lines used in Houston driveways, and the replacement part or paver needs to match what’s already in the ground. The most common GAF products we see locally are their permeable pavers and traditional interlocking concrete pavers. Permeable pavers have wider joint gaps designed to let water drain through, which matters in Houston because our stormwater volume is real. Traditional interlocking pavers have tight joints and rely on the sand between them for stability.

If you’re not sure which GAF paver you have, look at the back or bottom of a lifted paver. Most GAF pavers have a manufacturing mark or mold number stamped there. You can also measure the paver: GAF standard pavers are often 4″ x 8″ or 6″ x 9″, but some of their larger-format driveway pavers run 6″ x 12″ or 8″ x 8″. The thickness matters more than you’d think. Driveway pavers need to be at least 60mm thick (about 2 – 3/8″) to handle vehicle weight. Patio pavers, which are thinner at 40mm – 50mm, will crack under a pickup truck within a couple of years here. We see that mistake regularly when a previous contractor cut corners.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for GAF pavers, we generally recommend staying with genuine GAF product if the paver is still in production. Color matching is the biggest reason. GAF runs specific pigment batches, and an aftermarket paver that looks close in a catalog photo will show its difference within a year of Houston sun. If the exact paver is discontinued, we’ll talk through your options honestly, including whether a mixed replacement section makes sense or whether a larger area should be re-done for a clean match.

Signs Your GAF Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Here’s what we see most often in Houston, and what each symptom usually means:

  • Settled or sunken sections. This is almost always a base failure. The original install didn’t compact the sub-base in lifts, or water has migrated under the pavers and eroded the bedding. Houston’s clay expands and contracts with moisture, which accelerates the problem. You’ll see a visible dip after rain, especially near the garage apron.
  • Pavers shifting or spreading along the edge. Missing or failing edge restraint. The plastic or aluminum edging that holds the outside row in place has cracked or pulled loose, and now the whole field is slowly walking outward. Once the edge goes, the middle follows within a season.
  • Cracked or snapped pavers in the wheel path. Either the pavers are too thin for driveway use, or there’s a void under the paver. A paver bridging a small air pocket will snap under the weight of an SUV. If you have thin patio pavers in your driveway, this is what’s coming.
  • Weeds or ants coming up through the joints. The joint sand has washed out, and what’s left is organic material and insect trails. This is a maintenance issue that becomes a structural one. Joint sand is what transfers load between pavers. Lose it, and the pavers start grinding against each other and chipping.
  • Water pooling in the middle of the driveway after rain. The grade has flattened or reversed, usually from base settling. In Houston, standing water on pavers also means mosquitos, but the bigger issue is that water sitting under pavers weakens the sub-base over time and accelerates every other problem on this list.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A built-in window seat in a bay window

A full GAF paver driveway installation in Houston typically runs $7,000 – $18,000. Most of the homes we price fall between $9,000 and $14,000 for a standard two-car driveway with proper prep and edge restraint. Here’s what moves the number:

  • Square footage and driveway length. Longer driveways cost more, plain and simple. A short suburban driveway runs 400 – 600 square feet. A deeper lot with a side-load garage can hit 900 or more.
  • What we find when we dig. If the old base is sand over clay, we’re removing it all and starting fresh. If there’s good crushed limestone base already in place, we can often compact and re-use it. That’s a real cost difference, and we’ll tell you which situation you have before we write the number.
  • Paver style and thickness. GAF standard 60mm pavers cost less than their premium or permeable lines. Color blends and larger-format pavers add a couple dollars per square foot.
  • Access and disposal. If a truck can’t get to the driveway and material has to be wheelbarrowed in from the street, that adds labor. The same goes for hauling off the old pavers and base material.

Every price we give is written, line by line, before any work starts. That price includes excavation, base prep, compaction, paver installation, joint sand, edge restraint, and cleanup. Our work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something on that driveway fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, not a handshake.

If you need a section repaired rather than a full replacement, we price those jobs individually after we see the failure. A typical spot repair with base correction might run $800 – $2,500, but we won’t know until we open it up and see what’s underneath.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can safely check on your own. You can lift a loose paver and look at what’s under it. That tells you if you have sand bedding or if the paver was set directly on clay. You can check whether the edge restraint along your driveway is intact. You can watch how water moves across the surface during the next hard rain.

What we’d caution against is digging out a sunken section and re-setting a handful of pavers yourself. Without re-compacting the base in lifts and re-establishing the bedding layer, those pavers will sink again, usually worse than before. And if your driveway is steeply sloped or you’re dealing with heavy stormwater flow, the work gets dangerous quickly: a partially collapsed base under a sloped driveway can shift while you’re standing on it. That’s a professional-grade job with professional-grade risk to the rest of your driveway if it’s done halfway. If you’d rather not deal with it, call us at (254) 527-5340 and we’ll come out, assess what’s failing, and give you the straight number on what it costs.
