IKO Roofing: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you’re dealing with a failed IKO shingle, ridge cap, or underlayment issue, the installed repair cost in Houston typically runs $400 – $1,800 depending on the size of the damaged area and whether we’re patching or replacing a full slope. We stock common IKO Cambridge and Dynasty profile colors on the truck, so we can usually match your existing roof without waiting on a special order. Most IKO repairs are done in a single visit once we’ve looked at the damage.
How owners usually find the problem: a shingle tab on the lawn after a thunderstorm, a water stain on the ceiling after a driving rain, or granule grit collecting in the gutters faster than it used to. Sometimes it’s a roof inspection report from an insurance adjuster that flags wind-lifted tabs or nail pops. Houston’s heat and humidity age asphalt shingles faster than cooler climates, and IKO products, while solid, are not exempt from that math.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

Most of what we work on in Houston falls into two IKO lines: Cambridge and Dynasty. Cambridge is IKO’s long-running architectural laminate, popular on builder-grade and mid-range homes across the Houston metro. Dynasty is the newer, heavier architectural line with a larger exposure and a more dimensional look. The part compatibility matters because Cambridge and Dynasty shingles have different widths, nail zones, and color blends. You can’t mix a Dynasty shingle into a Cambridge roof and expect the stagger pattern or color banding to line up.
Identifying the right part starts with the shingle itself. Flip over a loose tab. IKO prints a plant code and manufacturing date on the back of each shingle. The color name (like Weatherwood, Driftwood, or Dual Black) is usually stamped there too. If you have the original bundle wrapper, even better. It lists the exact product name, color blend, and sometimes the batch code. Batch codes matter in Houston because sun fading over three or four years means a new bundle of the same “color” may not match exactly without blending from multiple bundles.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for shingles, ridge caps, and starter strips, we use IKO product. It matches the manufacturer’s specs, keeps any remaining manufacturer warranty intact where applicable, and avoids the color drift problem that generic third-party shingles create on a visible roof slope. For underlayment, sealant, and fasteners, we use trade brands that meet or exceed IKO’s recommended specs. Penhallow Remodeling Houston is an independent contractor, not an IKO dealer or affiliate, so our recommendation is based on what holds up in Houston weather, not what a manufacturer rep pushes.

Signs Your IKO Roofing Is Failing
- Granule loss in gutters and downspouts. All shingles shed some granules, but heavy accumulation means the asphalt matrix is oxidizing and losing its UV protection. On south-facing slopes in Houston, where the sun beats hard from April through October, you’ll see this before you see actual leaks.
- Curling or lifting shingle tabs. Heat and humidity break down the adhesive strip on the shingle underside. Once tabs curl, wind gets underneath them. After a good Houston squall, those tabs tear off completely.
- Water stains on the ceiling or around ceiling vents and can lights. A roof leak rarely appears directly under the damaged shingle. Water travels along the decking, around fasteners, and drips at penetrations. The stain is often eight to ten feet from the actual failure.
- Missing ridge cap or cracked hip shingles. Ridge caps take the worst wind exposure because they sit on the roofline’s highest edge. A cracked ridge cap lets water straight into the attic, and in Houston’s six-month rain season, it doesn’t take long to find the drywall.
- Nail pops or “fish-mouthing” across the field. Houston’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and the roof structure moves a little with it. Shingles that look raised or bumped along their face are usually a sign of nails backing out underneath the shingle above. That little gap is an open invitation for wind-driven rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here are the numbers we give Houston homeowners before any work starts.
- Small shingle repair (10 – 25 shingles replaced): $400 – $800
- Moderate repair (one slope section, up to 100 sq ft): $800 – $1,400
- Large repair or valley, ridge, and flashing work: $1,200 – $1,800
- Full roof replacement (IKO Cambridge or Dynasty, full tear-off): $8,000 – $20,000 depending on roof size, pitch, decking condition, and whether gutters or flashing are also being replaced
What drives the range? Roof pitch is a big one. A 12/12 two-story roof costs more per square than a 4/12 single-story because the crew works slower and needs staging. Decking replacement adds $2 – $3 per square foot when existing plywood or OSB is rotted or water-damaged. And if the roof has multiple layers of old shingles, the tear-off labor goes up. Every quote we write includes the shingles, underlayment, fasteners, sealant, disposal fees, and a written warranty on our work. The price we hand you is the price on the invoice. No change orders unless we open something up and mutually agree to expand the scope.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: inspect from the ground with binoculars, clear debris from valleys and gutters, and check the attic for water staining after a rain. Those steps help you know whether to call.
What you shouldn’t do: walk a Houston roof in July or after a rain. Composition shingles get slick when wet, and heat-softened shingles tear when you kneel or step wrong. Repairing a shingle means lifting the tabs above it, which risks cracking them, and if the underlayment or flashing is the real failure, a surface patch doesn’t fix anything. Roof work also means working at height, often on ladders, around power lines and overhead service drops. That’s not a weekend project. If you’ve got missing tabs, exposed nail heads, or a leak you can’t locate, call us at (254) 527-5340. We’ll get on the roof, find the actual failure, and give you a written number before any shingle comes off.
FAQs

IKO Cambridge shingles typically last 15 – 20 years in Houston’s heat and humidity, while Dynasty shingles often last 20 – 25 years because they’re heavier and carry more asphalt per square. A roof with poor attic ventilation will age faster because trapped heat cooks the shingles from underneath. Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll tell you honestly where your roof is in that lifecycle.
Yes, if the damage is localized and the surrounding shingles are still bonded and flexible, a repair makes sense. If the shingles are brittle, the granule loss is widespread, or there are multiple failures across several slopes, patching becomes throwing good money after a roof that’s already tired. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before quoting either route.
Most small repairs take two to four hours from setup to cleanup. Larger section repairs may run a full day. We give you an arrival window before we come and a real person answers the phone if you need to reach us during the job.
We keep the most common IKO Cambridge and Dynasty colors stocked for exact-match repairs. For less common colors or older lines that have been discontinued, we source from local Houston supply yards and blend from multiple bundles so the patch doesn’t look like a patch. Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll confirm color availability the same day.
