PGT Fence Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

PGT fence installation in Houston typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 fully installed, depending on footage, gate count, and whether we’re pulling old posts or working with fresh ground. We stock PGT-compatible hardware and panels on the truck for most common residential models, so a straightforward swap is usually a one-day job. Most Houston owners call us after a storm season when a gate starts dragging or a section leans, then discover the original install never set the posts right to begin with.

You know the feeling: the fence was fine in March, and by September the gate only opens if you lift it, or the corner section bows like it’s tired. Houston’s clay soil is the quiet culprit. It swells with spring rain and shrinks through August heat, and a post set in concrete that isn’t deep enough will slowly migrate. That movement doesn’t just make the fence look off. It torques the rails, strips the hardware, and cracks the pickets at the seams. By the time you notice, the post is rarely the only thing that needs attention.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

The repair work and installation we do covers the residential PGT fence lines you’re most likely to have in Houston: the standard aluminum and steel ornamental systems that took over neighborhood lots after the 2010s building boom, along with their companion gate kits. PGT’s fence division isn’t the same catalog as the impact windows that made the name famous in Florida, but the engineering philosophy carries over. Their fence posts are roll-formed for uniform wall thickness, and the hardware is sized for the picket-and-rail geometry, not generic off-the-shelf parts.

Here’s the gotcha that matters: a PGT section isn’t a universal commodity panel you can swap with the orange-store brand and call it matched. Post spacing, rail width, and picket gauge vary within the PGT lineup depending on whether the original system was wind-rated or a standard residential spec. Pull one of the rail end caps before you order anything. Most PGT rail ends have a stamping inside with the series code. Take a pair of calipers to the picket if there’s no stamp; if you’re reading a .050 wall thickness, that’s a wind-rated panel and you want the same gauge back. As an independent contractor here in Houston, Penhallow Remodeling isn’t affiliated with PGT directly, but we’ve installed and serviced enough of their fence systems to match panels without guessing.

OEM versus aftermarket matters more on fence parts than most people expect. The rails and pickets we source are matched to PGT profile dimensions, but for hardware like hinge sets, latch strikers, and post caps, we’ll often recommend a heavier aftermarket option because the original builder-grade pieces wear faster in our humidity. The exception is anything load-bearing at the hinge side. That piece, we keep OEM or better.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Gate drags or won’t latch without lifting. The hinge post has started to lean. Most Houston builders set fence posts at two feet or less, which is shallow for our clay. Every wet-dry cycle moves the post a little more, taking the gate out of square.
  • Pickets cracking at the rail connection. The aluminum expands and contracts with the Houston heat. If the rails were fastened with the wrong screw type or over-torqued at install, the metal has no room to move and stress-fractures at the fastener line.
  • Section leaning at the corner or end post. The concrete footing failed. In Meyerland-area homes where the soil shifts noticeably, we see corner posts pull their footing sideways, which then drags the entire connected rail line with it.
  • White chalky residue at the picket base. This is galvanic corrosion, usually where a steel post insert meets the aluminum picket. In Houston’s damp, below-ground moisture drives the reaction, and the powder coat eventually blisters off from underneath.
  • Rail sag between posts. The rail splice wasn’t inserted fully, or the post spacing is wider than the PGT panel was rated for. Some installers stretch spacing to save a post, and that six-inch shortcut reads as a sagging line within a year.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

A complete PGT fence installation in Houston typically runs between $3,500 and $9,000 for a standard residential lot. At the lower end, you’re looking at a straight run with one walk gate and solid ground to set posts into. At the upper end, you’re dealing with irregular lot lines, multiple gates, old post removal, and possibly a section that needs to meet Houston’s required setback or screening rules for pool enclosures.

The biggest cost drivers are post depth and gate count. Where we’re replacing a failed fence, we pull the old posts entirely and set new ones at 30-inch minimums, which runs more in labor but stops the one-season sag from reappearing. The number in your written estimate includes every part: panels, posts, rails, hardware, concrete, and haul-away of the old material. We don’t hand you a line item that quietly changes after the first hole is dug. The number on day one is the number on the invoice.

Every PGT fence installation we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the work fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

A fence isn’t a spring-under-tension situation, so you’re not facing the same injury risk as a garage door. But a bad fence fix wastes real money. The parts most owners try to handle themselves are the gate latch and hinge replacements. It looks simple: four screws. What goes wrong is that the screws are seized from corrosion, the holes strip, and now you have an oversized fastener situation that won’t hold. The gate sags again, and the metal around the hole is ruined for a proper repair. That turns a $200 hardware swap into a $400 post rebuild.

The safe checks are visual: walk the line after heavy rain, look for post lean, and note where the gate catches. If the problem is a hinge wearing thin, we can replace that hardware for you and re-square the gate in the same visit. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (254) 527-5340 and describe it. Give me the straight story on what you need, and I’ll give you the straight number on what it costs.
