CWS Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your CWS kitchen is showing its age and you’re weighing remodel options in Houston, a kitchen remodel typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and layout changes. We can walk your kitchen, match what you have to a practical scope of work, and put a written price in your hands before any cabinet gets pulled. Most Houston homeowners call us after the doors start sagging, the drawer glides bind, or a water stain on the cabinet base has quietly done more damage than they first thought.
We’re an independent Houston remodeling contractor, not affiliated with CWS. What we know well is how CWS kitchens age in Gulf Coast humidity, where the hinges wear first, and what it costs to bring the whole room back to a condition you’re glad to cook in.
Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS kitchens in the Houston market tend to fall into two groups: earlier builder-grade lines with particleboard cabinet boxes and laminate counters, and mid-range lines with plywood boxes and stone-look laminate or thin quartz. If you pull a drawer and check the inside of the cabinet face frame, you’ll usually find a small printed label with the cabinet line or at least a lot number. That label tells us more than a brand name on the door ever will.
The compatibility gotcha with CWS cabinet lines is that door profiles change between production runs more often than the box dimensions do. So a door ordered to match a 2016 CWS kitchen won’t necessarily sit flush against a 2018 cabinet box, even when both say the same line on the order sheet. When we replace individual doors or drawer fronts in Houston, we measure the actual opening and hinge-bore pattern, not just the printed model. For counters, CWS kitchens often shipped with a specific laminate edge profile that doesn’t match standard post-formed stock. If you’re keeping cabinets but replacing counters, that detail matters more than people expect.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for hinges, slides, and shelf pins, quality aftermarket hardware from Blum or Salice usually outperforms the original CWS spec for less money. For cabinet doors and face frames, we match what’s already in the kitchen rather than chasing a factory part that may not fit this production run anyway.

Signs Your CWS Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Doors that won’t stay closed or sit crooked. Houston’s humidity cycles swell the cabinet boxes just enough that hinge screws lose their bite. Once the screw holes are wallowed out, tightening them again only works until the next muggy August.
- Drawer glides that catch, squeal, or drop to the left. The soft-close mechanisms CWS used on mid-range lines were never built for a decade of daily use with pots and pans. When the glide detents wear flat, the drawer still moves but the soft close is gone and it feels like a hardware store floor model.
- Bubbling or peeling laminate at the counter edge and sink cutout. This is the classic CWS failure point in Houston, where a slow seep at the faucet or sink rim wicks under the laminate for months before anyone notices. By the time the edge lifts, the particleboard substrate underneath is swollen and soft.
- Cabinet base corners that discolor or crumble near the floor. Dishwasher leaks, refrigerator condensation, and mopping moisture all collect at the toe kick. On early CWS lines with raw particleboard edges there, the material wicks water like a paper towel and fails from the bottom up.
- Hinges that snap at the cup. We see this most on upper cabinets that get opened hard several times a day for years. The same door that held fine in Michigan or Ohio gives up in Houston’s damp-and-dry swings because the cabinet face the hinge mounts into is expanding and contracting every season.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Houston, a full CWS kitchen remodel lands between $14,000 and $45,000. A cabinet-only swap with new doors and hardware in a modest footprint stays near the low end. Moving a sink run, adding an island, or switching from laminate to Cambria quartz pushes that number up fast. A small kitchen refresh with painted existing boxes, new hardware, and a laminate counter replacement can come in around $9,000 – $20,000.
Every quote we give in Houston is a written line item price, not a range. That means the cabinet line, counter material, sink, faucet, backsplash, demolition, plumbing disconnect and reconnect, and haul-off are all listed before we ask for a signature. The number on the first page is the number on the invoice unless you change the scope after we start. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if something fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge, no reinspection fee.
Countertop installation on its own runs $2,000 – $6,500 in Houston depending on material. Backsplash runs $800 – $2,500. An island addition runs $3,000 – $10,000. If you’re the kind of homeowner who wants to understand exactly what drives cost up or down, call us and we’ll walk through it line by line. Trevor Nash is known for exactly that conversation.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely handle a few checks before anyone arrives: confirm the hinge screw holes are stripped by pulling a screw and looking for wood dust instead of clean threads; run a hand under the sink cabinet base after a heavy rain and see if the particleboard is damp; note whether the laminate edge by the dishwasher has lifted. Knowing those answers helps us give a more accurate first number.
Where DIY goes wrong on CWS kitchens in Houston is cutting laminate counters, scribing filler strips against walls that are never square, and routing hinge bores without a jig. If you’re comfortable swapping a hinge or adjusting a door catch, that’s fine and we’ll never talk you out of a $25 fix. But once it’s counter removal, cabinet structural work, or anything touching plumbing, the cheapest route is to call someone who does it every week. Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll give you a straight number for the work.
FAQs

Plan on 15 – 25 years for the cabinet boxes on mid-range CWS lines, with hinges and glides typically worn by year 10, and laminate counters showing their age by year 12 in Houston’s humidity. The first things to fail are almost always the soft-close glides and the sink-adjacent laminate.
Yes, and a surprising amount of it comes down to hinges, glides, and cabinet base repair. If the boxes are structurally sound, we can replace doors, swap hardware, re-laminate counter edges, or rebuild a sink base for far less than a full remodel. If the boxes themselves are swollen or the layout doesn’t work for you, replacement usually makes better sense than chasing repairs. Call (254) 527-5340 and Trevor Nash will tell you which one applies to your kitchen, honestly.
A cabinet-and-counter swap in an existing footprint usually runs 2 – 4 weeks from demo to final walkthrough. Moving walls, plumbing, or adding an island typically extends that to 5 – 8 weeks. We give you a written schedule with a real arrival window before work starts, and we hold to it.
We keep common Blum and Salice hinges, soft-close glides, shelf pins, and cabinet door bumpers on the truck, plus a working inventory of the laminate edge profiles most common in Houston CWS kitchens. For doors, drawer fronts, and matched panels, we order to the measured spec rather than the printed model, because CWS production runs change more than the labels do. If you’re also considering a broader update, we install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, and counters from Cambria and Silestone.
