Quikrete Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Quikrete-compatible driveway and paver products throughout Houston, with typical installed paver driveway work running $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, base prep, and paver style. If your Quikrete surface is spalling, sinking, or cracking along control joints, you’re usually looking at a base failure or drainage issue, not just a cosmetic problem. Most Houston owners discover the damage after a heavy rain cycle, when water pools in a low spot that wasn’t there the spring before. Penhallow Remodeling Houston is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Quikrete, but we work with their product line regularly and can match your existing surface or recommend a better-performing equivalent for Houston’s climate.
Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete’s driveway and paver line breaks into three broad camps, and the fix path changes depending on which one you have. The first is bagged concrete mix (Quikrete 5000, Crack-Resistant Concrete Mix, and Fast-Setting Concrete Mix) used for poured driveways, walkways, and slab repairs. The second is Quikrete’s paver system: the Paver Base, Leveling Sand, and Polymer Jointing Sand that work together under Belgard, Unilock, or standard concrete pavers. The third is pre-formed products like Quikrete WalkMaker forms and Quikrete concrete resurfacer, which Houston homeowners often use for a quick cosmetic refresh that later fails because the substrate wasn’t stabilized.
The compatibility gotcha we see most often in Houston: Quikrete’s polymer jointing sand has different activation requirements than generic brands, and if you don’t know which version went into your paver joints, adding the wrong sand can leave you with cloudy surface staining that never fully cures. Before swapping anything, check the product code printed on the bag or bucket, and measure your existing paver thickness. Most Quikrete-compatible paver systems use 60mm pavers, but some Houston driveways built in the last decade used 80mm units, and that thickness difference changes the base depth you need underneath. For OEM versus aftermarket, Quikrete’s bagged mixes are consistent enough that an aftermarket equivalent with the same PSI rating works fine; for the polymer sands and resurfacers, we stay with Quikrete because the cure chemistry is too particular to substitute.

Signs Your Quikrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Hairline cracks spreading in a spider-web pattern. This usually means the slab was poured too wet or cured too fast in Houston’s summer heat. The top layer shrinks faster than the body, and the surface crazes. Cosmetic at first, but water gets in and widens it.
- Pavers rocking underfoot or shifting at the edges. The base layer was too thin or the edge restraint wasn’t installed properly. In Houston’s expansive clay soils, a base that wasn’t compacted in lifts will shift within two or three wet-dry cycles.
- Polymeric sand washing out of the joints after rain. Either the sand was never activated properly with water, or the gap between pavers was too wide when it was swept in. Once the sand goes, the pavers start migrating.
- White chalky residue blooming on the surface. That’s efflorescence, and in Houston it’s almost always from moisture moving up through the slab and carrying salts with it. It signals a drainage problem underneath, not a surface problem on top.
- Low spots that pond water for more than an hour after it stops raining. The base settled unevenly. In the Meyerland area, where Trevor Nash and our crew know the soil moves more than most, we see this on driveways that weren’t poured over properly compacted select fill.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Quikrete-compatible paver driveway installation in Houston, expect $7,000 – $18,000. A poured concrete driveway using Quikrete bagged mix typically runs $4,500 – $12,000. Driveway replacement work lands between $5,000 and $14,000 depending on demolition and disposal of the old surface. Sealing, when it’s all the surface needs, runs $250 – $700.
What moves the number: total square footage, how much of the old base has to be excavated and hauled off, whether you need a new drainage swale or channel drain, and the paver style you pick. A standard 4×8 concrete paver in a running bond pattern costs less installed than a tumbled travertine-look paver with a soldier-course border. Every quote we write includes the base material, geotextile fabric where the soil calls for it, paver or concrete material, edge restraint, jointing sand, and final compaction, in writing, before any work starts. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation. If a paver settles or a crack opens inside the guarantee window, we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing, on every project.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things a Houston homeowner can safely check before calling anyone. You can look at whether water drains away from the slab, check if the edge restraint is still buried, and tap a few pavers with a rubber mallet to hear if they sound hollow underneath. That tells you whether the base is gone.
What we don’t recommend is trying to lift and re-level a paver section yourself. Paver base that has failed needs to come out and be re-compacted in lifts, and if you get the grade wrong by half an inch, you’ve just built a new pond against your foundation. Same logic applies to resurfacing a spalled slab with a Quikrete resurfacer: if the slab underneath is still moving, the new top coat will crack within a season. Trevor’s rule is simple: give me the straight story on what you need, and I’ll give you the straight number on what it costs. Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll walk the driveway with you, show you what failed, and tell you whether it’s a repair or a replacement, no pressure either way.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway over a compacted base should last 25 to 30 years in Houston, with joint sand touch-ups every 5 to 7 years. Poured Quikrete concrete driveways typically last 20 to 25 years before replacement, though Houston’s clay soil and summer heat can shorten that if the base wasn’t prepared right. Call (254) 527-5340 if your surface is failing early; that’s almost always a base problem we can diagnose in one visit.
It depends on the crack pattern and what’s underneath. Hairline surface cracks can be sealed and resurfaced, but cracks wider than a quarter inch that show vertical displacement mean the slab is moving and the repair won’t hold. We’ll tell you which one you have when we walk it, and the estimate for either path is free.
Most Houston driveway replacements run 3 to 5 working days from demolition through final compaction. Paver driveways with significant base repair can run 5 to 7 days. We schedule the work in a defined window, and we leave the job site cleaner than we found it, every time.
We keep Quikrete bagged concrete, paver base, leveling sand, and polymer jointing sand stocked on our trucks for the most common Houston jobs. If you need a specific Quikrete product or paver style matched, we’ll source it before we start and the written price will include it. Call (254) 527-5340 for a free estimate; a live person answers, day or night.
