James Hardie Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you’re looking for a James Hardie-focused kitchen remodel in Houston, you’re likely dealing with either water-damaged HardieBacker board behind a failed tile job, or you want the same moisture resistance James Hardie is known for built into your new kitchen. A full James Hardie-backed kitchen remodel in Houston typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and how much of the existing substrate has to be torn out and replaced. Most Houston homeowners discover the problem after grout cracks and water has already worked its way into the board behind it, which is exactly why choosing the right backer material matters before the first tile is set.
The good news is that Penhallow Remodeling Houston stocks HardieBacker board on the truck, and our crews work with it every week. If your existing substrate has failed, or you’re planning a kitchen remodel and want cement board done right the first time, we can diagnose the issue and give you a written number before any work starts. Call (254) 527-5340 and Trevor or our team will talk you through what you’re seeing.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie makes two cement board products we use in kitchen remodels: HardieBacker 1/4″ board and HardieBacker 500 (1/2″) board. The 1/4″ board is for floors and countertops. The 1/2″ board is for walls, including behind backsplash tile. If someone installed drywall or green board behind your kitchen tile instead of cement board, that’s where the trouble starts – drywall wicks moisture and the tile adhesion fails within a few years in Houston’s humidity.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: HardieBacker 500 sheets are 3’×5′, not 4’×8′ like drywall. That changes the seam layout, and it’s one reason a “cheap” drywall crew doing tile work leaves seams that telegraph through the finished surface. We layout 3×5 sheets so seams land where they should, not where they fall.
As for OEM versus aftermarket: there isn’t really an aftermarket equivalent for HardieBacker in a kitchen wall application. Some crews use WonderBoard or Durock, which are also cement board, but they are heavier, dustier to cut, and don’t carry the same consistent thickness across the sheet. When a homeowner asks why we spec HardieBacker, the honest answer is that it stays flatter and scores cleaner, which matters when you’re setting a straight backsplash line across 12 feet of wall. Penhallow Remodeling Houston is an independent remodeling contractor – we are not affiliated with James Hardie – but we choose their board because we’ve had fewer callbacks with it than any other substrate we’ve tried.

Signs Your James Hardie Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking along the countertop/backsplash seam. This is the first visible sign. The wall behind the tile is flexing or has absorbed moisture, and the grout is the weakest point. If you’re seeing this in a Houston kitchen, the substrate was likely installed over drywall or without the proper thinset coverage.
- Tile bulging or sounding hollow when tapped. Cement board that wasn’t screwed off properly, or was installed over an uneven stud wall, will allow the tile to delaminate. A hollow sound means air pockets behind the tile, which means the tile is holding on by grout lines alone.
- Staining or discoloration at the tile edges. Water is getting behind the tile and wicking outward. In Houston kitchens, the culprit is usually the sink backsplash or around the dishwasher where steam and splash constantly contact the wall. Once staining shows, the substrate behind the tile is already wet.
- Cracked corner bead or caulk pulling away at the counter. Movement between the counter and the wall is normal, which is why we use a flexible caulk at that joint, not grout. If caulk is pulling away, the wall board behind it is shifting or swelling, a sign the substrate was wrong for the application.
- Musty smell near the sink base cabinet. Water that gets behind tile and into the wrong substrate will eventually smell. James Hardie board doesn’t feed mold the way drywall does, but if the board wasn’t HardieBacker to begin with, that smell is your drywall decomposing behind your backsplash.

In Houston, we price James Hardie kitchen remodeling work in a few bands. A full kitchen remodel with HardieBacker substrate throughout, new cabinetry, countertops, and backsplash typically runs $14,000 – $45,000. If the job is just replacing failed substrate and re-tiling a backsplash, you’re looking at $800 – $2,500 for the backsplash portion, with the tear-out and board replacement usually adding $500 – $1,500 depending on how much wall has to be opened. Countertop replacement runs $2,000 – $6,500, which includes the HardieBacker 1/4″ underlayment if the old counter comes out.
What drives the number: square footage of tile, whether the old substrate is drywall or cement board (drywall takes longer to remove from studs), the cabinet line you choose, and the countertop material. Cambria or Silestone quartz costs more than a basic granite, but carries its own manufacturer warranty alongside our workmanship guarantee.
Every Penhallow Remodeling Houston quote is a written price before any work starts. Not a range. Not a ballpark. The number you sign is the number you pay, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing. If something isn’t right inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s how Trevor Nash looks at it. You can absolutely pop off a cracked tile and see what you’re dealing with underneath. If the board behind it is dark, crumbly, or soft, stop. That’s a substrate failure, and fixing it properly means pulling tile, cutting out the bad board, and installing new HardieBacker with the right screw pattern and mesh tape on the seams. The saw dust from cutting cement board is silica-heavy – you need a proper mask and, honestly, a decent understanding of how tile layouts work so your seams don’t land in the wrong place.
What we tell Houston homeowners is this: check behind a loose tile if you’re curious. But if you see black or green board, that’s not James Hardie, and that’s your water problem. Give us a call at (254) 527-5340. We’ll come look, tell you what’s actually wrong, and hand you a written number. No pressure, no obligation, and a live person answers the phone.
FAQs

HardieBacker cement board itself has a 30-year limited warranty from James Hardie, but the tile installation over it is what you’re actually living with. In Houston’s humidity, a properly installed HardieBacker substrate with thinset and correct seam treatment should outlast the tile and grout on top of it. The board doesn’t fail; the installation over drywall or over un-taped seams is what fails. Call (254) 527-5340 if you’re seeing early cracking and we’ll tell you what’s really going on.
In most cases, no. Once water has soaked into drywall or green board behind kitchen tile, the only reliable fix is removal of the affected board and replacement with HardieBacker or similar cement board. Patching over failed substrate is how you get a repair that lasts six weeks and then cracks again. We price the tear-out honestly, and our quotes show exactly what’s being removed and what’s going back in.
A standard backsplash tear-out, substrate replacement, and re-tile runs 2 – 3 days in a typical Houston kitchen. A full kitchen remodel including cabinet, counter, and substrate work usually runs 4 – 8 weeks depending on cabinet lead times and counter fabrication. We give you a real arrival window in writing, and that window is part of the Kingswell standard we’ve stood behind since 2004.
We stock HardieBacker 1/4″ and 1/2″ on our trucks along with the proper alkali-resistant mesh tape and screws for cement board. We also work with KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Kohler and Moen fixtures, so the entire kitchen remodel can be handled through us. You won’t need to order or pick up anything. Call (254) 527-5340 for a free estimate and we’ll bring the straight story and the straight number.
