Abodu Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Abodu-compatible driveway pavers in Houston, with most complete replacements running between $7,000 and $18,000 depending on square footage, paver style, and what’s happening underneath the surface. The majority of Abodu owners call us because a section has settled, cracked, or started separating at the seams after a few Houston summers, and we can usually match the existing paver profile without tearing out the whole driveway. If your pavers are shifting or the base is washing out, you’re looking at a repair that most often costs less than a full replacement, and we’ll give you a written number before any work starts.

What we typically see in Houston: clay-heavy soils that swell and shrink through wet-dry cycles, which pushes pavers out of plane. You’ll notice it first as a lip, a low spot that ponds after rain, or pavers that wobble when you step on them. Left alone, that movement works its way across the driveway until whole sections need to be lifted, re-based, and re-laid.

Which Abodu Models This Applies To

A wide opening with a new beam where the kitchen wall was removed

Abodu’s accessory dwelling units and modular homes have shipped with a few different driveway packages over the years, and the paver style matters when you’re trying to match a failed section. Most Houston Abodu installations we’ve worked on use a standard concrete interlocking paver, either a 60mm structural paver for driveways or a thinner 40mm paver if the original spec called for pedestrian loading only. The thinner pavers are the ones we see fail first under vehicle traffic, especially in neighborhoods like Meyerland, Bellaire, and the Heights where the underlying clay doesn’t give much support during dry spells.

To identify what you have, measure the thickness of a lifted paver or check the original site plan if you kept one. If you’re not sure, take a photo of the paver and a close-up of the surface texture, and call us. We can identify the profile and source a match, whether that’s an Abodu-spec OEM paver through our supplier network or a quality equivalent from Belgard or Unilock that matches the dimensions and color. One compatibility gotcha: some Abodu driveways use a chamfered edge paver that’s no longer in production, which means we either mill-match from a current line or replace the section with a deliberate border so the transition looks intentional. We’ll walk you through that choice, in plain terms, before we order a single pallet.

Signs Your Abodu Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers rocking underfoot or under tire. This means the bedding layer has eroded or the base wasn’t compacted evenly. In Houston, the usual culprit is water getting under the pavers through an open joint and washing out the sand.
  • Low spots that pond water after rain. Ponding indicates the sub-base has settled unevenly, usually where the driveway transitions to the garage or the street apron. That transition is vulnerable in Houston because the street-side base gets wetter than the house-side base.
  • Edge pavers separating from the restraint. Without a solid edge restraint, the whole field starts to spread. Once a paver moves a quarter inch, every paver behind it follows, and you’ll see the gap widen over a single season.
  • Cracks running in a straight line across multiple pavers. A straight-line crack pattern usually traces back to a joint line where the base was thinnest, often over a utility trench that was backfilled in a hurry. Houston’s expansive clay makes these cracks open and close seasonally, which grinds the pavers against each other.
  • Weeds and ants building up in the joints. This tells you the joint sand is gone, which lets water in and gives the base a way to migrate. By the time you see the ants, the pavers have likely already started to shift.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Abodu driveway replacement in Houston, budget $7,000 to $18,000 installed. The spread comes down to three things: total square footage, paver thickness (40mm vs 60mm), and how much of the existing base can be salvaged. If the base is shot from years of water intrusion, we’ve got to dig it out, install a proper compacted aggregate base, and build it back up, which adds real labor hours but gives you a driveway that won’t shift again in five years.

Scope Typical Installed Price, Houston
Spot repair (re-level up to 50 sq ft, re-sand joints) $800 – $2,500
Section replacement (lift, re-base, relay 100 – 300 sq ft) $2,500 – $6,000
Full paver driveway replacement $7,000 – $18,000
Concrete driveway replacement (if you’d rather go concrete) $4,500 – $12,000
Driveway sealing (concrete or asphalt surrounding pavers) $250 – $700

Every quote includes the parts, labor, base work, haul-off of old material, and a written guarantee. The number we give you before work starts is the number on the invoice when we leave. That’s the Penhallow standard, and it’s been that way since we opened our doors under the Kingswell banner in 2004.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a couple of things any homeowner can safely do to assess the situation. You can watch where water collects during the next rain, rake new polymeric sand into open joints, and check whether edge restraints are still buried. Those observations help, and we’re glad to hear them when you call.

What we don’t recommend is lifting and relaying pavers yourself. The lifting itself isn’t dangerous, but getting the base right is genuinely difficult work. If you don’t re-compact the sub-base in lifts, the new pavers will settle within a year and you’ll be back where you started, minus the money you spent on rental equipment. Trevor Nash has seen enough Houston driveways rebuilt twice because someone tried to save a thousand dollars on the base and ended up paying for the full job a second time. Give me the straight story on what you need, and I’ll give you the straight number on what it costs. Call us at (254) 527-5340 and we’ll come out, look at the base, and give you a written price before you spend a dollar.
