Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Quikrete kitchen remodeling in Houston typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, and most projects we handle involve reframing, leveling, or rebuilding the substrate layers beneath tile, countertop decking, and cabinet runs. The products you see on the shelf at Home Depot or Lowe’s are not the whole story: in our Houston work, Quikrete materials show up most often as floor patch, self-leveling underlayment, mortar beds, and concrete backer board interfaces. Homeowners usually call us when they have already opened up a wall or pulled up a floor and found a failing substrate: cracked mortar, sagging cement board, or a floor that has settled unevenly over the years. That moment is exactly where our written-price, written-guarantee style of remodeling fits.

Penhallow Remodeling Houston is an independent remodeling contractor. We are not affiliated with Quikrete, but we work with their products constantly and we know how they behave in Houston soil and Houston humidity. If you have a Quikrete product that has failed behind or beneath your kitchen, we can tell you exactly what it will cost to fix it before we pick up a tool.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

The Quikrete line covers a lot of ground, and the right fix depends on which product you are dealing with. The brand makes structural concrete mixes, but the products that matter in a Houston kitchen remodel are usually these: Quikrete Floor Mud (deck mud used as a sloped or flat mortar bed under tile), Quikrete Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer (poured over uneven slabs before flooring goes down), Quikrete Sand Topping Mix (used for thicker patches and shower pans), Quikrete Mortar Mix (bonding cement board to framing), Quikrete Concrete Bonding Adhesive, and Quikrete Vinyl Concrete Patcher. If you have the original bag or bucket, read the product code on the side; the number after the product name tells you the specific formulation. If the bag is long gone, take a photo of the surface texture and thickness and send it to us. A quarter-inch gray patch with a smooth top is usually a self-leveler; a sandy, gritty bed an inch or more thick is usually deck mud or sand topping mix.

The compatibility gotcha with Quikrete in kitchens is moisture and movement. Houston slab homes shift, period. The clay-heavy soils in neighborhoods like Meyerland, Westbury, and Sharpstown expand and contract with rain and drought. If your original contractor used a standard mortar bed over a slab that moves, the tile above it will crack within a few years no matter how good the tile job was. When we rebuild, we specify the right Quikrete product for the layer it is serving, and we add isolation or reinforcement where the slab is active. That is the difference between a patch that lasts eighteen months and a substrate that lasts the life of the kitchen.

Signs Your Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Hollow-sounding tile when you tap it. The mortar bed or thinset bond has separated from the slab or backer board beneath. The tile is not broken yet, but it is no longer supported, and foot traffic will finish the job.
  • Cracks that run in a straight line across multiple tiles. This is usually a slab movement issue, not a tile issue. The Quikrete layer above the slab cracked with the movement, and the tile simply followed. Patching the tile alone never works; the movement underneath has to be addressed.
  • Grout crumbling out at the floor-to-cabinet joint. Cabinets and floors settle at different rates. The grout joint between them is the first thing to give way, and it tells you the substrate below is flexing.
  • A soft or springy spot in the floor. Cement board or mortar that has lost its bond will flex under weight. This is most common around the dishwasher and sink base, where small leaks have soaked the substrate over time.
  • White efflorescence staining on the grout or tile edges. Water is moving through the mortar bed. That means a moisture source is still active somewhere, and the substrate is wicking it through. New tile over a wet bed is money thrown away.

We see all five of these in Houston routinely. The common thread is that the visible damage is only the top layer. The Quikrete beneath is where the failure actually lives.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

A full Quikrete-related kitchen remodel in Houston runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on the size of the kitchen, what is failing underneath, and the finishes you choose. Smaller jobs, like tearing out and re-pouring a failed mortar bed under a 100-square-foot section of floor, land closer to $9,000 – $20,000. Countertop substrate rebuilds run $2,000 – $6,500. Backsplash removal and reinstallation with new backer board runs $800 – $2,500.

What drives the number up or down is simple: how much of the old substrate has to come out, whether the slab itself needs crack isolation or leveling, and what cabinet and countertop materials you want on top. We write every job as a line-item price before work starts. You see the parts, the labor, the disposal, and the warranty as separate numbers, and the total is the total. No change order, no day-of surprise.

Every Quikrete-related repair we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the fix fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, and the return visit is free. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee.

DIY or Call Us?

If you are trying to figure out what failed, you can do some safe investigating. Tap the tile with a screwdriver handle and mark the hollow spots with painter’s tape. Take photos of any cracks with a quarter in the frame for scale. Check under the sink for signs of past leaks. That information helps us give you a real number faster, and it costs you nothing.

What we do not recommend is pulling up tile and rebuilding a mortar bed yourself if the slab below is cracked or moving. Quikrete products are forgiving, but a kitchen floor that flexes will crack again in six months if the base is not prepared correctly. And if the failure is around plumbing, you are opening a wall that may hold surprises you do not want to find alone. Give me the straight story on what you need, and I’ll give you the straight number on what it costs. Call (254) 527-5340 and ask for a written estimate. It costs nothing, and the number we put on paper is the number on the invoice.
