Toto Home Additions & ADU: The Houston Owner’s Guide
When you’re planning a home addition or an ADU in Houston with Toto fixtures specified, the plumbing rough-in is where most of the cost and frustration hides. A Toto-compatible addition or ADU build in Houston typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 depending on square footage, foundation type, and how many wet walls you’re adding. We install Toto toilets, sinks, and tubs as part of our full home addition and ADU construction, and we stock the most common Toto rough-in parts on our trucks so the plumber isn’t making three trips across town.
Most Houston homeowners discover a Toto parts problem the same way: the water pressure fades across two rooms, or the toilet starts rocking on the flange six months after the addition went in. The trick with Toto is that their rough-in specs are tighter than most American brands, and cutting corners on the rough-in is what causes the wobble, the weep, and the silent leak behind the wall.
Which Toto Models This Applies To

Toto splits their line into a few series that matter for home additions and ADUs: the Drake two-piece for standard bath rough-ins, the Ultramax one-piece when space is tight, and the Aquia skirted models when you want a clean floor line in a small ADU bath. Wall-hung Toto units, like those in the Aquia wall-hung line, require a carrier system mounted in the wall cavity before tile goes up, and that carrier is a separate piece of engineering from the bowl itself.
The compatibility gotcha with Toto in Houston additions: Toto bowls use a 12-inch rough-in as standard, but their skirted models have almost zero tolerance on the flange position. If the flange sits even half an inch off center, the skirt binds and you’re chipping new tile to fix it. We measure the flange offset before the drywall goes on, not after. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend Toto OEM flush valves and fill valves on any addition with Toto fixtures specified. Aftermarket flappers and fill valves fit, mostly, but the flush volume calibration drifts, and a 1.6-gallon flush that actually delivers 1.3 gallons means double-flushing a new ADU toilet. That’s a false saving.

Signs Your Toto Home Addition & ADU Installation Is Failing
- Toilet rocks or shifts when you sit down. The flange wasn’t reset after the slab pour, or the flange sits too high above the finished tile. In Houston slab additions, we see this most often when the plumber set the flange on the rough slab and the flooring installer floated the tile higher than planned.
- Water pressure drops when a second fixture runs. Undersized supply lines from the addition’s new manifold. A Toto toilet fill cycle shouldn’t rob the shower of pressure if the supply was sized for the fixture count.
- Slow drain gurgling in a new bathroom. The vent isn’t tied in properly, or an AAV (air admittance valve) was used where a real vent should have gone. Toto fixtures don’t change the physics: a poorly vented line drains slow and smells.
- Grout cracking around the toilet base or tub. Movement in the subfloor, often from a crawlspace or pier-and-beam addition in Houston where the soil shifts with the wet-dry cycles. The Toto fixture is fine; the floor under it isn’t.
- Dark staining at the base of the toilet. The wax ring failed, or it was never seated because the flange was below the tile line. Houston humidity makes this worse; once moisture gets under the tile, it takes a while to dry out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Toto home addition or ADU build in Houston runs $45,000 to $130,000. On the lower end, you’re looking at a smaller bedroom addition or a compact ADU with one bath and a kitchenette. The higher end covers a larger addition with multiple wet walls, a full Toto bath spec, and higher-end flooring and trim.
What drives the number up in Houston specifically: soil condition and foundation choice. A pier-and-beam addition runs less than a slab because the soil preparation and concrete pour account for a serious portion of the budget, especially in areas near Meyerland with known clay expansion. We give you a written line-item price before any work starts. If the Toto rough-in needs a flange reset or a carrier replacement, the parts cost is a line item, not a surprise at the end.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things you can check on a Toto fixture yourself: confirm the shutoff valve at the wall works, confirm the bowl isn’t cracked at the china, and check that the tank-to-bowl gasket isn’t weeping. Those are visual checks that take five minutes.
What you shouldn’t DIY is anything involving the rough-in, the flange, or a wall-hung carrier. Once you open a wall in a Houston addition and find a carrier that wasn’t blocked properly, you’re into reframing territory. The same goes for resetting a toilet on a flange that sits too high or too low. If you’re seeing any of the failing signs above, call us at (254) 527-5340 and we’ll send a tech out to look. The first visit is a conversation, not a pressure close.
FAQs

A properly installed Toto toilet will run 15 to 20 years in Houston without major parts replacement, though the fill valve and flapper typically need swapping around year 8 to 10. Houston’s water hardness and humidity shorten the rubber components faster than the china itself wears. Call (254) 527-5340 and we’ll check your specific model’s service history before recommending anything.
Usually yes. A rocking toilet is a flange reset, not a new toilet. A slow-draining line is a vent correction. Most of the Toto issues we see in Houston additions are installation errors from the original build, and those get fixed without replacing the fixture itself. If we find the fixture itself is cracked or the carrier is undersized for the model, replacement becomes the honest answer.
A flange reset on a standard Toto toilet takes one visit, usually under three hours including setting the new wax ring and re-caulking. A wall-hung carrier replacement takes longer because the wall has to come open, the carrier gets blocked and leveled, and the wall gets closed and finished. That’s a two-day job in most Houston additions.
We stock Toto fill valves, flush valves, flappers, wax rings, and flange hardware on our service trucks. For less common Toto parts like specific tank lids or skirted toilet bases, we order direct from our supplier and have them in within a few days. We also keep parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone materials for the cabinetry and countertop work that often accompanies an addition.
